Pohang Accelerator Laboratory

The third-generation synchrotron radiation accelerator was completed in 1994 after seven years of construction for science and technology development. It is an important research facility for basic scientific projects to lead Korea’s science and technology in the 21st century. Also, Korea will be the third country in the world next to the USA and Japan to have the fourth generation synchrotron radiation accelerator that can observe 10 billion times brighter light source and can be used to develop new drugs and source technologies based on the analysis of new substances and materials. The site can also contribute to the advancement of various industries.

Advanced New Material Industry

We have announced that we will establish the Titanium Commercialization Technology Center in the Blue Valley National Industrial Complex and foster local strategic industries by signing the "Gyeongbuk Province - POSCO Inc. - Pohang City Titanium Industry Promotion MOU". Through this, we are planning to create Pohang as a global hub of the titanium industry. In addition, we have signed an MOU in terms of the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany and to attract alternative materials for depleted resources (helium 3), and we are also establishing a basis to test and evaluate high-tech industrial materials and components.

Marine Energy Industry

Pohang city has further developed the marine resource industry and established / implemented a systematic and future oriented policy in marine industry. We are working to establish a base for the exploration of the ocean in the area of the East Sea, such as the Tamhae No. 3 and the Earthquake Research Center. We are also building a renewable energy biomass power plant using marine resource clusters and pure wood pellets as fuel. In addition, the Pohang Geological Resources Demonstration Research Center is researching and developing 3D submarine exploration systems, plant core components, and new geological materials.

ICT Convergence Industry

Pohang City is leading the fourth industrial revolution with the advancement of ICT Convergence Industry which is converged of IOT (Internet of Things), Big Data and Mobile. We have created the SW convergence cluster, and we are currently building the bio-metal 3D printing research center, and the smart media innovation center.
